Rentec Direct is pleased to announce the 2023 Rentec Direct Tech Mastery Scholarship recipients.

The Tech Mastery Scholarship program from Rentec Direct offers assistance to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing an education in technology by helping them achieve their academic dreams and future goals in the technology industry.

The 2023 Tech Mastery Scholarship has been awarded to students working towards a degree in computer science or a related field.

“Fresh and creative minds are key to innovations in the tech industry,” says Nathan Miller, president of Rentec Direct. “At Rentec Direct we feel that one of the best ways to ensure a bright future for the field is to support future technology leaders and influencers by encouraging academic achievement. We are pleased to provide this scholarship to meet that goal,” explains Miller.

Tech Mastery Scholarship

As part of the application process, students are to submit an essay answering the following question:

What are some of the greatest obstacles the tech industry has overcome in the past five years and what, if any, major obstacles do you foresee for the industry in the future?

Essays were evaluated based on the level of creativity, humor, grammar, and content.

Applicants were also asked to submit a brief cover letter explaining why they are pursuing the degree they have chosen and how it will benefit them in the future.

“Each year, our scholarship committee has their work cut out for them,” says Miller. “This year, our number of applicants tripled, and there was no doubt that we would see a lot of worthy students. This year’s winners clearly expressed their passion for their prospective fields within the tech industry and have already made impressive strides within the industry through their academics, internships, and extracurricular activities.”

2023 Tech Mastery Scholarship Recipients

Congratulations to this year’s scholarship recipients!

Eirik Marquez, University of Colorado Colorado Springs

Eirik is an incoming freshman at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. He attended Theodore Roosevelt High School and studied Computer Science while attending the Design and Technology magnet program. During his high school years, Eirik started the National Honor Society Chapter at his school, taught elementary school students coding, and received an internship at H-E-B corporate, where he successfully deployed his first web application. This application reduced employee workloads and saved the company tens of thousands of dollars.

Eirik hopes to one day become a Software Engineer. He specifically plans to code applications relating to providing education opportunities to those without access. Furthermore, he plans to use cyber security to improve app sec and secure code within the industry.

Dararith Huy, Oregon State University

Dararith is a senior majoring in computer science at Oregon State University. In addition to his strong academic record, Dararith has taken on various computer science-related projects, including developing a natural language processing model. In his free time, he enjoys playing ping-pong. Dararith has an interest in artificial intelligence and would love to work with machine learning and robotics in the future.

Skylar Aviles, University of Denver Sturm College of Law

Skylar is a graduate of the University at Albany, where she majored in emergency preparedness, homeland security, and cybersecurity with a minor in criminal justice. She is an incoming freshman at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law.

Skyler is a Hispanic woman leader with a love for fashion. She hopes to encourage more women to participate in cybersecurity and volunteer within cybersecurity. Her passion for the field was kindled when her father came back from a vacation and was met with a mandated court appearance; an individual that looked almost identical to her father was claiming his identity and suing her father for identity theft. While her father was able to prove his identity, Skyler began to consider the possibility of other innocent people who could also become the victims of a similar scheme from cybersecurity hackers. In the future, Skyler plans to work as a cybersecurity attorney in Silicon Valley.

Isaac Klennert, Fairmont State University

Isaac is an incoming freshman at Fairmont State University and will be majoring in Cybersecurity. In his spare time, Isaac enjoys traveling with his family. An avid traveler, he’s been to 33 states and plans to see more. He took a month-long trip to Yellowstone to sightsee along the way.

Isaac knew at a young age that he would enjoy a career that involved working with computers; within the last few years, his dream solidified as he began to explore the field of cybersecurity. He says that when he found the field, he “instantly decided to help my county and community by
becoming a defender and protector of digital information.” Isaac says his dream job would be either to defend the country on a national scale at the NSA or FBI or perhaps in the fledgling area of cybersecurity for spacecraft and satellites with NASA.
