Whether you are using a mobile app, shopping online, or streaming your favorite show, an API (Application Programming Interface) is often silently working in the background to make that exchange possible.
This level of communication isn’t just for consumers; most business applications need to communicate with other internal and third-party systems to perform various essential tasks. For instance, to generate monthly payslips, an internal accounts system may need to share data with a customer’s banking system to enable automated invoicing and communicate with an internal timesheet application to ensure accurate hours are recorded.
The concept of APIs is not new to Rentec Direct. Our software already leverages these crucial connections for features like Tenant Screening, Bank Sync, and dozens of other integrations Rentec Direct has with industry partners like Tenant Turner, zInspector, and ShowMojo. To better support our clients, Rentec Direct is introducing an Open API to advance connectivity and customization with your preferred programs.
What is an Open API?
An Open API is more than just a buzzword; it is a standardized bridge that allows different systems to exchange data securely across the internet.
API stands for Application Programming Interface. Think of it as a translator or a waiter in a restaurant.
- You, the client (the customer), place an order (a data request).
- The waiter (the API) sends your request to the kitchen (the server).
- The waiter then brings your dish (the requested data) back to you.
By leveraging a RESTful architecture, Rentec Direct ensures near-universal interoperability. As the most widely adopted API style in the world, REST allows our system to ‘handshake’ with almost any third-party platform. Whether you are connecting to a legacy system or a cutting-edge app launching tomorrow, our API provides the flexible foundation needed for total integration.

When will the Open API go live?
The Open API is scheduled to go live in Q2 2026. The new RESTful API will be automatically available to all Rentec Direct Pro and PM clients at no additional cost.
This feature is currently undergoing testing. Implementing an Open API requires enhanced security safeguards to ensure your data remains protected at every level. Our development team carefully validates each step to maintain the high security and reliability standards that Rentec clients expect.

Once it’s available, you can easily generate new API keys.
In your Rentec Direct account:
- Click on Settings
- Under Tools, click on Utilities
- Click on API Keys
- Click on +Add API Key
- Generate New API Key
