Drone photos can provide much more than just a \u2018cool\u2019 look to a property. \u00a0From roof inspections to showcasing area amenities there are many use cases for those who invest in real estate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professional photographers often offer aerial photography as an add-on to the normal photoshoot. \u00a0If you have been curious about how to utilize drone photography for your management business, you might be asking the following questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should I use my photographer or hire a drone specialist? \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When should I use the service and when should I pass on it? \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do I get the most bang for my buck out of my aerial shoot? \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a look at the answers to these questions and more tips for property managers and landlords about using drones for aerial photography.<\/p>\n<h2>Aerial Photography and Landlords<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professional aerial photos or \u201caerials\u201d can have great value to landlords if used properly. \u00a0Rental units often have outdoor amenities or are located near key attractions. \u00a0You can showcase this easily with a drone. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, inexperienced drone operators will often lack the Photoshop skills to easily show the relative locations. (Photos: soldbyair.com)<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Drones for roofing<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you manage a number of properties, knowing someone with a drone may come in handy. \u00a0Insurance companies are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">switching to drones<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when inspecting roof damage. \u00a0It\u2019s much cheaper and quicker than it is to send someone up on a ladder. \u00a0Have a leaking roof or some damage from a tree? \u00a0A drone may be able to help to scope out the situation ahead of time. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note if you bring in a drone pilot for roof damage they likely will not be able to give you an official assessment on site. \u00a0Drone operators who work with insurance companies are often instructed specifically to avoid offering advice or assessment on the damage itself. \u00a0They are there simply to take photos for the insurance companies. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Ask about the license<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are using aerial photos for marketing be sure to ask about the license that comes with those photos. \u00a0Some photographers or drone pilots give you the photos and don\u2019t really care what you do with them. \u00a0Others will put very aggressive restrictions on them. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For rental properties verify that any license for the photos allows you to reuse the photos when you need to find new tenants. \u00a0Be careful however, if you are listing properties on a MLS, many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sriplaw.com\/mls-really-photos-pt-1\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will not allow you to use the same photos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more than once.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>FAA Requirements<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FAA requires anyone flying drones for profit to be certified. \u00a0Drones are easy to fly, and also easy to crash. \u00a0Hiring a noncertified pilot increases your liability should something go wrong. \u00a0The FAA provides a free <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/amsrvs.registry.faa.gov\/airmeninquiry\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to verify if a pilot is certified or not. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many rules and regulations drone pilots must understand. \u00a0For example, if there is a medium to large airport nearby there is a good chance the drone photographer is going to need specific FAA authorization to fly. \u00a0The FAA is currently rolling out a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/uas\/programs_partnerships\/uas_data_exchange\/airports_participating_in_laanc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to speed up authorization. \u00a0However, only a handful of airports are supported and it will take time to fully roll out. \u00a0Until then if your property is close to a busy airport getting a drone to fly there legally will require plenty of lead time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Photographer or Drone Specialist?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are drone pilots who only do aerial photography. \u00a0There are normal photographers who use it as an add-on service. \u00a0Who should you go with? \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you choose your regular photographer be sure to verify certification. \u00a0The specialized drone pilot will often have a better drone while the photographer will usually have better Photoshop skills. \u00a0The key is to find the best of both worlds. \u00a0Your best bet is to ask for a portfolio of work to verify their skillset.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8446\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8446\" class=\"wp-image-8446 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rentecdirect.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/portfolio-600x484.png\" alt=\"Drone photography soldbyair\" width=\"600\" height=\"484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rentecdirect.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/portfolio-600x484.png 600w, https:\/\/www.rentecdirect.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/portfolio-300x242.png 300w, https:\/\/www.rentecdirect.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/portfolio-768x619.png 768w, https:\/\/www.rentecdirect.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/portfolio-610x492.png 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8446\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Be sure to ask for a portfolio to verify the skill level of the drone operator.
