{"id":2140,"date":"2014-10-21T10:44:28","date_gmt":"2014-10-21T17:44:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rentecdirect.com\/blog\/?p=2140"},"modified":"2022-06-16T09:24:57","modified_gmt":"2022-06-16T16:24:57","slug":"why-do-people-move","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rentecdirect.com\/blog\/why-do-people-move\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Do People Move?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Property Managers and landlords should consider human migration behavior in the United States when evaluating their properties to ensure their tenants are satisfied with their rental.<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentecdirect.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/US-Census1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2142\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rentecdirect.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/US-Census1.png\" alt=\"Rentec Direct \" width=\"237\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rentecdirect.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/US-Census1.png 338w, https:\/\/www.rentecdirect.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/US-Census1-191x300.png 191w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 237px) 100vw, 237px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jobs, family, health, and school are all legitimate reasons to move out of your current home. \u00a0But what tops the charts as the number 1 reason to move in the United States? \u00a0According to a report published by the US Census Bureau in June of 2014, housing-related reasons are the top reason why people move in the United States<a title=\"US Census for Rentec Direct\" href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/prod\/2014pubs\/p20-574.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">*<\/a>. \u00a0Figure 1 details the results of the 2013 Annual Social and Economic Supplement of the Current Population Survey where 48.0% of the 35.9 million people who moved in the United States noted \u201cHousing\u201d as their reason for moving.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Housing-related moves are broken down into the following categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wanted new or better \u00a0home\/apartment<\/li>\n<li>Wanted cheaper housing<\/li>\n<li>Wanted to own home, not rent<\/li>\n<li>Wanted better neighborhood\/less crime<\/li>\n<li>Other housing-related issues<\/li>\n<li>Eviction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From these findings, moving for a \u201cnew or better home\/apartment\u201d and \u201cother housing-related issue\u201d accounted for the majority of responses (Figure 2). \u00a0This is significant because it accounts for migration behavior in the United States. \u00a0Rather than <em>needing<\/em> to move for a new job or to be closer to family members, \u201c<em>wanting<\/em> [a] new or better home\/apartment\u201d is a conscious choice people make. \u00a0And it is a choice landlords and property managers should pay attention to. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentecdirect.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/US-Census-2-Rentec-Direct.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2145\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rentecdirect.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/US-Census-2-Rentec-Direct.png\" alt=\"Rentec Direct \" width=\"206\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rentecdirect.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/US-Census-2-Rentec-Direct.png 403w, https:\/\/www.rentecdirect.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/US-Census-2-Rentec-Direct-152x300.png 152w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a property manager or landlord you should ask yourself<strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Am I providing a great home for my\u00a0tenants? \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Is my\u00a0home something my\u00a0tenants will <em>want<\/em> to move out of in search of a better housing?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Small home improvement projects and updated property features are great ways to increase the value of your property and ensure your tenants will want to stay in your unit.
